Working With The Environment

The international macadamia industry and the various grower’s associations such as the Southern African Macadamia Growers Association (SAMAC) and the Australian Macadamia Society strive to use working practices that limit the affect Macadamia cultivation has on the environment.

This is achieved in the following ways:

working with the environment

  • Many farms will have “set aside land” and bush areas to avoid sterile environments that are unfriendly to the natural bird, insect and wild life.
  • Integrated Pest Management is applied which includes a combination of biological, chemical, physical and cultural forms of pest suppression.
  • Growers strive to encourage the development of natural enemies of insect pests.
  • Pest levels are monitored and chemical control is applied only when pest levels reach scientifically determined threshold levels.
  • The industry is continuing to fund research on natural methods of pest control.
  • Stringent testing takes place to ensure that banned and dangerous chemicals are not used.
